Peter Brock (1945-2006) By Chris Meaden
My first memories of Peter Brock are right from the very start of his driving career when I was just a kid. The only reason I started following Peter’s pursuits was that my father owned an Austin Freeway at the time and of course Peter raced an Austin, albeit an A30.
I remember watching a Channel 0 telecast from Phillip Island. Peter in the A30 had a race long duel with future Bathurst partner Brian Sampson in his Triumph Spitfire. They continued to battle for the entire slowdown lap after the race was completed!
Defunct magazine Australian Autosportsman interviewed Peter Brock in December, 1968. Peter is quoted as saying “I’d like to race the real thing- open-wheelers; my ambition has always been to be a good racing driver. To go as far as I can go, if I can.”
Ambition achieved.
